Waterproofing Outdoor Steps
The worn treads and risers of an outdoor staircase, and the floor in front of them, were prepared and covered with waterproof layers.

Step by step
1. Before

The steps had been worn down by the weather and by foot traffic. On an outdoor staircase, rainwater easily finds its way in through the joints and edges.
2. Preparation

Anything loose or worn is taken off and the surface is cleaned, so the new layers sit on a sound base.
3. The first layer

The first layer goes over every tread and riser.
4. The next layer

Next comes a dark grey layer over the whole staircase and the floor in front of it, building up the final thickness.
5. The edges

The edges and corners of the steps need extra care, as that's where foot traffic wears a coating first. That way the staircase is left with no open joints for rainwater.
