Painting
Courtyard Wall: Plaster Repairs and Fresh Paint
An outside wall with blistered and fallen plaster was patched, reinforced with mesh, given a thin finishing coat and painted white.

Step by step
1. The wall before

The plaster had blistered and fallen off in large pieces, and the paint was peeling.
2. Removing and patching

Anything loose comes off until we reach a sound base. The holes are filled with new plaster.
3. Mesh

Mesh goes over the patches and where they meet the old plaster, so cracks don't open up later.
4. A thin finishing coat

A thin coat of plaster goes over the whole wall, so the patches and the old parts become one even surface.
5. Painting

The wall is painted with an exterior paint that stands up to sun and rain.
6. The result

The wall is clean and straight again along its whole length, and the courtyard feels brighter.
Questions this job answers
I fill a crack in the wall and it opens again. Why?Because the crack is moving and filler doesn't stretch. It usually sits where materials meet, on hollow plaster or over a deeper cause, so it needs mesh or a different repair. The plaster sounds hollow when I tap it. What does that mean? That the plaster has come away from the wall behind it, even if it doesn't show yet. It isn't filled over: it is removed back to a sound base and redone.
