Step by step
1. Where we started

The paint had lifted in patches, even high up the wall.
2. By the stairs

Next to the door and the stairs, too, the paint had come off down to the plaster.
3. Preparation

The damaged patches are scraped and filled, and the edges are masked off before painting.
4. Painting

The new paint goes over whole walls, not just the patches, so there are no differences in shade.
5. The result

Smooth walls in a warm cream, with no trace of the peeling.
Questions this job answers
Why is the paint peeling off my walls?Usually because of damp, or because it went on over a surface that wasn't holding: dust, loose old layers, a glossy base. The fix is to remove whatever isn't holding, not to add another coat on top.Part of my wall is damaged. Is it enough to patch and paint just that spot? The patching is done on the spot, but it is better to paint the whole wall. New paint over a patch usually stands out from the old paint around it, however well the shade matches.
