Roof with Solar Panels: New Screed and Spray Polyurethane Foam

The old torn membrane was stripped and a new screed was pumped in, with the solar panels left in place. Primer and spray polyurethane foam then went on top, right up to the tiled roof that meets the terrace.

Roof with Solar Panels: New Screed and Spray Polyurethane Foam

Step by step

1. The old membrane

Torn old membrane under the solar panels

The old membrane had torn and come away in large pieces. It was no longer protecting the roof.

2. Stripping

Pieces of stripped membrane on the roof

All of the membrane is stripped off, so the new work goes onto a sound base.

3. Primer

The roof coated with black primer under the panels

The surface gets a dark primer, including under the panels and around their bases.

4. Pouring the screed

A worker spreading screed under the solar panels

The screed is pumped up to the roof and spread starting from the hardest spots, under the panels.

5. Around the bases

Fresh screed around the panel bases

The screed flows around the solar panel bases and wraps them in. The panels stay in place throughout.

6. Beside the tiled roof

A grey flat roof beside a tiled roof

The flat roof meets the bottom edge of a tiled roof. That spot needs care, because water runs down onto it from the tiles.

7. Primer before the foam

The roof coated with black primer

Black primer goes over the new surface, up to the parapets and the edge of the tiles, so the foam bonds well.

8. Spray polyurethane foam

Spray polyurethane foam goes on in one continuous layer with no joints and closes the corner between the flat roof and the tiled roof.
