Old Bitumen Membrane Stripped and Replaced with a White Coating

A roof's old bitumen membrane had wrinkled and come away. It was stripped off completely and the roof was coated with white waterproofing, including the low walls under the railings.

Old Bitumen Membrane Stripped and Replaced with a White Coating

Step by step

1. The roof before

The roof with its old dark membrane and railings

The roof was covered in an old bitumen membrane full of patches. Once a membrane gets to this point, one more patch won't fix the problem.

2. Stripping

Pieces of old membrane torn up on the roof

The membrane is cut and stripped off piece by piece.

3. Membrane that had come away

The old membrane rolling up as it comes off the roof

In many places the membrane rolled up like a carpet, because it had already come unstuck. Water could run freely underneath it.

4. A wrinkled surface

Close-up of the old membrane, wrinkled and worn

Sun and age had wrinkled and cracked its surface, so it no longer protected the roof.

5. A clean base

The roof without the membrane, with the last pieces being cleared

The leftovers are cleared and the surface is cleaned, so the new material bonds straight to the slab.

6. White waterproofing

A tin and a roller by the low wall under the railings

The white waterproofing is spread over the roof and up the low wall under the railings, around each of their posts.

7. The joints

The low wall and its corner with the floor coated white

The corner between the floor and the low wall gets extra care, because that's usually where the first cracks open.

8. The result

The white roof with its railings and satellite dishes

A clean white surface, bonded across its whole area, with no joints or patches.
