Sealing the Column Bases on a Tiled Terrace

Where columns and walls meet the floor is one of the weakest points of a terrace. Here the tiles around them came up and the joints were sealed with a coating and reinforcing fabric.

Step by step

1. Opening up the base

Broken tiles and rubble around the base of a column

The tiles and old bedding around the column are broken out and removed to expose its base.

2. Cleaning

Cleaning the base with a pressure washer

Dust and leftovers are washed away with a pressure washer, so the materials bond to a clean surface.

3. Ready for waterproofing

The column base cleaned, with an open channel around it

A clean channel is left all round the column, ready for the waterproofing.

4. The materials

A roll of reinforcing fabric and a bucket of waterproofing

The waterproofing is a liquid coating with a reinforcing fabric, which adds strength at the corner where the column meets the floor.

5. The waterproof layer

A grey waterproof layer around the base of the column

The layer covers the bottom of the channel and runs up the column, closing the corner with no joint.

6. At every column

A sealed column base among the floor tiles

The same work is done at every column on the terrace.

7. Along the foot of the walls

An open channel along the foot of a wall

A strip is opened along the foot of the wall too, as the joint between wall and floor is just as vulnerable.

8. The result

The foot of the wall sealed with grey waterproofing

The strip is sealed with the same system, so the terrace is closed off wherever it meets an upright surface.
