The terrace's old, stained coating was cleaned and primed, then the floor and low walls were covered with a white waterproof coating.

Terrace with Iron Railings Waterproofed in White

Step by step

1. Where we started

The old stained coating along the low wall

The old coating had faded and was covered in stains, especially along the low wall.

2. The whole surface

The terrace before the work

The wear covered the whole terrace, not just a few spots.

3. A clean base

The cleaned terrace with the primer tins

The surface is cleaned so the new material bonds to a sound base.

4. Primer

Brushing on the primer

Primer goes over the whole surface. It binds any remaining dust and helps the waterproof coating stick.

5. Ready for waterproofing

The tub of waterproof coating on the primed terrace

Once the primer is dry, the terrace is ready for the main coat.

6. Low walls first

The low walls under the railings coated white

The coating goes on the low walls and the corners under the railings first, as these are the trickiest spots.

7. The white coat

The white coat on the floor and up the corner of the low wall

The white membrane covers the floor and joins up with the low walls, so no joint is left open.

8. The result

The finished terrace, white right up to the railings

One continuous white surface from edge to edge. The white also reflects the sun, so the rooms below heat up less.
