Terrace Stripped of Old Tiles and Given a New Cement-Based Layer

The broken tiles came up, the joints were cleaned out and sealed, and the terrace and the narrow balcony beside it got a new cement-based coating.

Terrace Stripped of Old Tiles and Given a New Cement-Based Layer

Step by step

1. The old tiles

Broken tiles pulled up on the terrace

The tiles had cracked and come loose. They all come up so we can see what is underneath.

2. Underneath

The old dark layer with a rotten wooden joint

With the tiles gone, the old dark layer showed, and in one joint a strip of wood that had rotted.

3. The joint

The opened joint with the rotten wood inside

The wood in the joint had rotted and left gaps. The joint is opened up and cleaned out before it is sealed.

4. The materials

Bags of powder material and a bottle of liquid on the terrace

The materials for the new layer wait on the cleaned surface.

5. Sealing along the length

A joint in the floor sealed along its length

The crack running along the floor is filled with sealant, because that is where water finds its way in.

6. The wall junction

The narrow balcony with fresh material at the foot of the wall

The joint between floor and wall gets its own treatment. Two surfaces meet there, and cracks open easily.

7. The narrow balcony

The narrow balcony with its new grey coating

The new layer runs the full length of the balcony, right up to the door.

8. The result

The terrace with its new coating, still drying

The terrace and balcony now have one continuous surface, with no broken tiles and no open joints.
