The parapet walls were damp, with cracked render and black stains. They were repaired and painted, and the terrace floor was waterproofed with a white coating.

Step by step

1. Damp stains

The terrace walls had black stains and worn paint from the damp.

2. Cracked parapets

A parapet with cracks and peeling paint

On the parapets the render had cracked and the paint was peeling. Water gets into the wall through the cracks.

3. Removing loose render

A parapet with the render removed and the bricks exposed

Render that was no longer holding was taken off down to the bricks. Nothing holds on a crumbling base.

4. New render

Fresh render on the lower part of the parapet

The bare patches are rendered again with new mortar.

5. Smoothing

The repairs are smoothed into the rest of the wall so they will not show after painting.

6. Painted walls

The terrace with painted walls and primer starting on the floor

The walls were painted a warm beige. On the floor the primer goes on, helping the waterproofing to bond.

7. White waterproofing

The white waterproofing covers the whole floor and runs up the foot of the walls.

8. The result

The terrace with a bench under the awning

A well-kept terrace with sound walls and a watertight floor, ready to be used again.
