Emulsion paint
In other languages: Πλαστικό χρώμα · الطلاء البلاستيكي
The everyday water-based paint for indoor walls and ceilings. It thins with water, dries quickly, has little smell and comes in matt, satin or glossier finishes.

Emulsion is the standard water-based paint used inside homes (in Greece it is simply called "plastic" paint). It is a mix of pigments and a binding resin in water; as the water evaporates, the resin forms a thin film on the wall. It goes on with a roller or brush, the tools wash out with water, and it is the usual choice for living rooms, bedrooms and hallways.
The finish affects both the look and how hard-wearing it is. Matt hides the flaws in a wall best, while satin and glossier finishes wipe clean more easily but show every bump. For kitchens and bathrooms there are emulsions made to stand up better to washing and moisture.
Emulsion needs a clean, dry, sound surface. It will not hold on dust, soot, mould or old peeling paint, and over old oil-based paint it needs sanding and a suitable primer first.
