Bathroom & Kitchen Renovations

Quick answers

Can my bathtub be replaced with a floor-level shower, with no step?

Usually yes, as part of a renovation. The floor is rebuilt sloping to a drain or a channel, so the shower sits level with the bathroom. Whether the drainage fits underneath is decided on site.

A walk-in shower has no tray and no step. The water lands on the same floor as the rest of the bathroom and runs away through a floor drain or a long, narrow channel. To make that work, the floor is rebuilt from scratch with a slope towards the drain.

The new floor sloping to a long, narrow channel under the window

In this bathroom the tub and the tiles came out, a spot was opened in the floor for the new drain, and the new floor was sloped towards a channel under the window. A glass panel keeps the water inside, with no doors and no step. The same was done in the bathroom with the green bathtub.

The key question is whether there is enough depth in the floor for the drain and the slope, and where the main soil pipe runs. In an apartment you don't dig into the slab below, so everything has to fit within the thickness of the floor. That is judged on site, and sometimes only once the old floor is up.

When there isn't enough depth, one option is a low built-up shower base. In a small bathroom, a shower base was built where the bathtub used to be.

Keep in mind: without a tray, water spreads across the floor if the slope isn't right. The slope, the drain and waterproofing the shower area under the tiles are what make the difference, and they are hard to fix once the tiles are down.
